Performance / Practical Blade Comparison
Many of the Hanwei katana come in multiple blade styles that
use the same fittings. The Practical Katana is discussed here, but the blade
geometry for all the performance and elite series katana are
similar. The XL and XL light blades for all swords are the
same geometry and length. The Elite (Standard) is
different for each model. The Practical Plus upgrades the
fittings. The Musashi and Shinto katana
are a different type of steel and have a much better polish.
The Tori and Tiger are folded and use Swedish powdered steel.
The fittings are the same, but there are now three different
versions of the Practical Katana. The XL, Elite, and XL
Light blades allow the customer to make the choice without
changing the price drastically.

The specifications on these sword really tell it all.
The XL is the heaviest version made for tameshigiri. We
feel this is the best cutting sword in it's price range.
The XL light adds bo-hi (groove) to reduce weight while keeping
the XL dimensions. The Elite is shorter and lighter and
offers a blade that is similar to the classic model but offering
improved lines and looks. While it does not have the heavy
blade of the XL, the Elite blade is still a good cutter. (Click
